DeterTech and Devon & Cornwall Police team up to protect local sports clubs from theft
Since March 2025, 36 clubs across Devon and Cornwall have been targeted by thieves stealing high-value items such as mowers, tractors and grounds maintenance equipment. In response, the regional Crime Prevention team is offering SmartWater forensic marking kits to clubs at a subsidised rate, helping communities safeguard their valuable assets.

Through this initiative, clubs can mark and register their equipment with SmartWater and display prominent warning signage on-site – a proven deterrent that makes stolen property traceable and significantly reduces the risk of repeat offences.

Supporting Safer Communities

Hannah Denton, Crime Prevention Tactical Advisor for Devon & Cornwall Police, said:

“Theft of tractors and mowers from sports clubs has a significant impact on the local community, and it’s something we take very seriously.”

So far, more than 60 clubs have signed up to the scheme, demonstrating the growing commitment to protecting community facilities and deterring crime through proactive measures.

Bridestowe & Belstone Cricket Club near Okehampton was one of the clubs affected earlier this year. Facilities Manager James Ewen explained:

“We were shocked to have been targeted so close to the start of the season. The financial impact was significant – replacing specialist mowers and equipment was not easy at short notice. In our rural location, we felt especially vulnerable. We welcomed hearing about the SmartWater initiative and hope it will deter thieves, along with strengthened locks and cameras.”
