Knowledge is important for personal growth and development. Knowledge sharpens our skills in the challenging environment of designing, implementing, and managing security solutions. David will set out clear rationale to justify consideration of specialist courses for security professionals in project management, security consultancy and control room management. He will illustrate why such training opportunities can benefit the individual and add value to an organisation delivering or employing professional security services. Through education and training, a security professional is able gain control of their workplace practice by using that knowledge, function more smoothly and deliver effective services. We become smarter with the power of knowledge. "

The provision of automatic smoke vents is a requirement of Approved Document B in specific applications. The Smoke Control Association, in answer to Dame Judith Hackitt's call on industry to raise the bar, has recently published detailed guidance on Natural Smoke and Heat Exhaust Ventilators (commonly referred to as AOVs) and in particular, how full compliance can be achieved. A common and potentially dangerous misconception is that by installing an actuator onto a window, the contractor is fulfilling their obligations. This is wrong. This presentation, by the SCA's Will Perkins, sets out how compliance can be achieved, the regulations underpinning this mandatory requirement and plenty of useful information to help contractors deliver legally compliant solutions.

The world is recovering from the devastating Covid-19 pandemic, and we are threatened by war in Eastern Europe. The cost of shipping containers around the world has skyrocketed as had the cost of raw materials such as copper and, increasingly, rare earth materials. Energy costs have gone through the roof. There is a global shortage of computer chips. All these things, taken together, threaten our businesses and the security systems we used to protect those businesses.

This presentation will highlight key drivers behind the latest 2021 edition of BS 8418, the standard for monitored CCTV systems capable of summoning a Police response and will explore:

    • the two types of compliant system, both of which qualify for a URN. Each of these tiers should be selected based on site risk assessment, one tier for high security applications and the other for lower security applications
    • the change of the phrasing and document structure, describing what should be achieved in lieu of prescriptive requirements defining how they should be achieved.

The key objective of this guide is to raise awareness of the need to ensure that any powered smoke extract fans which are selected, manufactured and installed in accordance with EN 12101-3:2015, must then be correctly maintained to ensure that they continue to offer building occupants the highest degree of smoke protection and reassurance possible.

Following the publication of Dame Judith’s Hackitt’s report “Building a Safer Future” and the ongoing Grenfell Tower inquiry there has been a hugely increased focus on the competency of contractors and especially those contractors whose work could affect the fire integrity of, or life safety within a building.

This presentation looks at how Third Party Certification can help to demonstrate competency especially in relation to the provision of Life Safety Fire Risk Assessments and Evacuation Alert Systems.
